Where is Unexploded Ordnance (UXO)?
Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) can be found in most States and Territories of Australia. Defence has undertaken research to identify and define these locations.
This information is provided to allow members of the public and other interested parties to identify land parcels potentially affected by UXO. Further details on these sites can be found in the UXO Site Information page.
Site Categorisation
The Department of Defence identifies and maintains a record of sites affected, or suspected of being affected, by UXO that may influence the nature of land use.
In order to assist those with interests in land and those performing land management activities, Defence categorises the potential presence of UXO as follows:
- Substantial
- Slight
- Remote
- Other
- Sea Dumping Area
A sixth category, Information, is included where records indicate that the area was used for Defence purposes of a type not associated with producing UXO. These categories are not in themselves a risk rating. Further information on the UXO categories can be found in the Categories for UXO Potential page.
Where ocean areas have been used for military activities, they are categorised in accordance with the abovementioned categories. Ocean areas that have been used for historical sea-dumping of waste material which may include explosive ordnance are categorised separately as sea-dumping areas. Further information on UXO in the marine environment can be found in the UXO in the Marine Environment page.
Defence UXO Mapping Application
Clicking on the map below will take you to the Defence UXO Mapping Application. Please be aware that the application has to load a very large background data set and this may take some time. Further information to assist in using the interactive mapping application can be found in the UXO Mapping Application Information document.
